The Senate's Secure Airport Public Spaces Act would allow airports to use passenger facility charges to tighten security in nonsecured areas, such as baggage claim. Funds from the Airport Improvement Program could be used to upgrade surveillance cameras in public areas.
JetSuite, a private charter service backed by JetBlue Airways, will order up to 100 hybrid-to-electric planes from start-up manufacturer Zunum Aero, which also counts JetBlue as an investor. "The aim is to improve the experience of flights under 1,000 miles, with shorter trips through the airport and cheaper-to-operate flights," said Bonny Simi, president of JetBlue Technology Ventures.
Robert Isom, president of American Airlines, recently told employees that the carrier is reworking its service at New York City-area airports to focus on direct routes preferred by business travelers. "We want to serve all the business markets we can," Isom said.

"Having qualified, talented maintenance technicians is vital to maintain America's leadership in aviation," said AOPA President Mark Baker. "We commend Congress for taking steps to address the aviation skills gap and recruit the next generation of workers to ensure our industry remains vibrant."

Ernest "Hod" Hutson flew 58 missions into the Balkans, Italy and France for the Army Air Corps during World War II, then went on to enjoy a long career in aviation back in the States. "I had a flight school, the works," Hutson said. "But the aerial spraying is the one that we made our living with and the rest we just took care of."
